Dear families,
There are some new protocols around student absences, which brings us in line with mainstream schools. A reminder to please call or text the school (02 9868 1920 or 0476836216) when your child is absent or delayed, otherwise we will be sending texts to families by 11am each day. Thank you for your understanding.
We have been thrilled with the outcome from a recent video commissioned to showcase our school. We feel it represents the school well and helps new parents to feel reassured about a special school setting. Check it out on the school website- opening page at the bottom- 4 minutes of this week, that you won’t regret. Further to this, The Epping Club arranged for the Daily Telegraph to come to our school to showcase our road crossing. It was great to see our school highlighted in print. These are the links to the online and printed versions (which were surprisingly different).
To add to the range of ways we are outreaching to the broader community, I was recently asked by Sue Larkey to be interviewed for her regular podcast series. Sue is a great presenter and author in the field of autism spectrum disorder, and it was a pleasure to be interviewed by her. I will forward the link when it is issued.
Thank you to the 2 parents from the P&C who represented the school community at a recent teacher panel. Emma Taylor was successfully appointed to a permanent role at Karonga School and we know that she is a great choice.

Principal
Please remember to put names on all articles of clothing and footwear and any items students bring to school including pants. This will make it possible to return belongings to your child.
Room 2 started off the term with Swim School for our junior classmates. Tarnae and Jordan really enjoyed the opportunity to swim every day for two weeks as all of the boys did. They formed lovely relationships with the instructors. We have also been focusing on ball sports, and have seen Tim excel at shooting hoops during basketball practice. All of the boys enjoy throwing and kicking balls up on the tennis court!
In maths this term we have been learning about the concept of heavy and light through hefting. Farhan has particularly enjoyed lifting objects from around the classroom to determine if they are heavy or light, while Mark has been taking notes on his worksheets for the results.
We have been very excited each week to get to go to the Mini-Woolies and choose a snack to buy on Wednesdays. William and David have excelled in lining up with their items, and scanning their Karonga Card to pay for the item that they chose. Room 2 has done a wonderful job each week of walking together to the Mini-Woolies and waiting patiently for their turn.

Until next time,
Montana and Sophie
This term, Room 12 has had a busy timetable. We have our daily walk and sport, where we have been learning to play ball games. Sebastian has been getting better at shooting a basketball at the hoop. Agam has been learning to pass a soccer ball back and forth with a staff member. On top of that, we had swim school in week 2 and 3, which our class greatly enjoyed participating in. Daniel and Ishan were very happy to be in the water and practice skills such as floating and kicking.
Room 12 has started making weekly visits to the Mini-Woolies to select a snack and drink to purchase every Wednesday morning. This is great as it gives them a safe environment to practice buying items from a grocery store. The class has been great at sitting together and waiting for their turn to enter the store, before selecting an item and bringing it to the counter.
Our class has been working well, particularly in art, where we have been learning about a different artist each week. We recently learned about Edvard Munch and his famous ‘Scream’ painting. Agam and Ali were great with looking at the colours in the artwork and painting their own background. We enjoyed recreating our own versions of the artwork painting a background and copying the ‘scream’ pose to put over it.
Communication has been a big focus in our classroom this term. Gregory and Nakissa have been making big strides using their communication devices to say ‘hello’ to staff and their peers during morning circle. Ishan has been using switches to stimulate speech for him to repeat ‘hello’ during morning circle. The different coloured switches have greetings from around the world as part of our modern languages unit of work.
Room 12 has done beautifully navigating their learning for the term across all units of work and improving on our goals.

Javier and Rupak
Welcome to Lego Club! Karonga has launched a new club for our Lego fans.
We found a big box with good old Lego in the resource room, which sparked the idea to get the keen builders together for a club. Like in every good Lego collection there is a bit of everything in the box and it has been great fun to explore the different pieces. Have a look at the students’ creations from week 1 at Lego club.
Mike and Timothy got straight into building houses and cars. Mike’s car then crashed into his house. James enjoyed playing with the mini figures.
We also discovered Lego blocks with numbers and letters, and Harvey demonstrated his literacy skills by spelling ‘oval’ and ‘hat’.
Lego Club will now be on every week, so watch out for more creations to come.

During art club the students have been getting involved in using many different types of media. With assistance, they have been able to access balloons, drawing equipment, paint and different objects to glue onto paper.
Drawing on balloons was a hit with Sadie and Matty, they enjoyed drawing people. Ishan and Farhan made a collage using different items with assistance. Danial, Noah and Sebastian completed watercolour paintings using paintbrushes while Pranay and Gregory used crayons and textas to draw.
