Dear Families
We are excited to welcome everyone back for Term 3! As we dive into this new term, we want to share some updates and highlights that make this term special for our school community.
It has been wonderful to see our students quickly settling into their routines. They are actively participating in various learning activities and showing great enthusiasm, which sets a positive tone for the entire term.
Last week, on Monday, our dedicated Karonga staff attended the annual SEPLA conference, hosted by the Special Education Principals’ and Leaders Association. The theme of the Conference was ‘Innovate. Connect. Inspire’. As the theme reflects, it will help the staff to reimagine education and foster collaboration among educators, providing a platform for sharing best practices and innovative strategies to support students with unique learning needs. Our staff returned with valuable insights and tools that will enhance our approach to education.
Ruth is currently on leave, enjoying an overseas trip. In her absence, I will be stepping in as Relieving Principal, while Emma Taylor will be Relieving Assistant Principal. Ruth will be back in Week 4 of Term 3.
Classes have access to the Mini woolies store throughout the school week, Room 5 runs Karonga kiosk on a Wednesday where students learn work skills by operating the shop. During these sessions, students learn to make choices based on shopping lists, carry items in baskets, queue appropriately, and complete purchases. Mini Woolies not only replicates a shopping experience for students but provides a learning space where students get opportunities to practice community expectations and conventions in a safe, accessible environment. Introducing innovative practice of Students uses Karonga credit card to make payment at kiosk facilitate a modern payment process that students can replicate in community. Thanks to all parents who supported our programme by depositing $20 into school credit card via School bytes. This collaborative model not only fosters student engagement and real-world learning but also promotes independence and confidence in decision-making and shopping abilities.

Join Us for Education Week Open Day: One of the key events this term is our Education Week Open Day, themed “Ignite Your Potential.” We cordially invite all parents to visit the school on Wednesday, 6th August, from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm. The day will commence with a guided tour of the school, followed by an opportunity to spend time in your child’s classroom, morning tea, and a parent workshop - Kids Xpress: Understanding Emotions. I look forward to seeing you next Wednesday at the Open Day.
Warm Regards,
Dipti Jani, Relieving Principal Karonga

We are already halfway through the year, and Room 6 students and staff are all wondering where the time has gone! David and Suzie remind us of the day and date every morning by arranging the class calendar. Suzie also runs us through the schedule for the day. Aiden is good at reminding us what activities we have coming up for the week, he is especially keen to share our community access location.
We have been practicing some work experience skills in Room 6. Louisa and Naya like to help Sujung deliver supplies to other classes and do office tasks such as shredding and laminating. James’ job is to collect the basket of roll bags from the office and deliver the bags to each class. As school captain, Geonwoo is responsible for putting up the flags each morning and remembering to take them down at the end of the day. We also work together with Zoe to pack first aid kits for Royal Life Saving, and do some work in the garden including planting and composting.

Each afternoon we have started sitting together to read a chapter of a story. Last term we read Snow White, the novel of the movie, and this term we have just started Tales of Ancient Egypt to go alongside our history topic. We enjoy this quiet end to our day and are all keen to hear what happens next in the story.
We look forward to seeing what the rest of this term brings.
Emma and Sujung
It’s been a busy and productive start to the term in Room 14! We have been focusing on building our communication, literacy, and numeracy skills while also developing greater independence as learners.
This semester, our students have been working hard on communication and transition skills. We are learning to express our feelings and needs, and we've made great progress in identifying tools to help us regulate. We are also practicing how to greet others appropriately using either our voices or Symbolstix symbols.
Titan, who will be graduating Year 12 at the end of this Term, has started attending his post-school placement three days a week and is settling in well. We wish him all the best for the future!
In literacy, we are learning how to engage with books in meaningful ways. We have been enjoying listening to and responding to a variety of texts.
In numeracy, we’ve been exploring 3D shapes and working on understanding the concepts of “full” and “empty” as part of our Volume and Capacity unit.
We hope you enjoy the photos and seeing all the wonderful learning that has been happening in Room 14 so far this semester!
