The weather has really impacted our ability to access the playgrounds, oval and multisport court recently. This is really frustrating the students and staff, so here is hoping that the weather is more consistent for the rest of the term.
During the Working-from-Home phase of our time during COVID-19 I took the opportunity of contacting the families of ex-Karonga students to capture their thoughts about transitioning from school and how we could improve what we do, and what we offer. Whilst I phoned around 8 families with the same questions (who were all very pleased to be remembered, and positive about their experience) it is something that we hope to commit to on an annual basis going forward. It is only through the honesty of our families that we can improve what we do at Karonga and how we go about things. Do be assured that we reflect on these observations and it will form part of our future focus.
In the same vein I hope to reach out to individual families before the end of the year who felt unable to complete the recently google-form survey. In this way it gives us a community voice which can help us to improve and learn about what is valued and what we need to change.
Karonga celebrated NAIDOC this week. We enjoyed an incursion led by Department of Education environmental teachers in the hall (socially distancing) and a great time was had by all. Check out the Facebook page for some great photos of students handling artefacts and listening to Aboriginal stories.

Room 3 have been enjoying developing their cooking skills in class. Jayden, Brendan, Lachlan, Elijah and Amy carefully measured the ingredients that we needed to make a variety of delicious muffins and cupcakes. We all took turns to use a switch to mix all of the ingredients together with an electric beater before baking. We especially enjoyed tasting the different mixtures!
In Science, Room 3 have been exploring geological changes to the Earth’s surface and extreme weather events. We all worked together to create a paper mache volcano. Next, we combined a mixture of detergent, food dye, water, vinegar and baking soda to create a chemical reaction. We all watched with great excitement and anticipation as our volcano erupted!
Room 3 have also been enjoying using a variety of different technology to enhance many of their learning experiences. Brendan and Jayden cleverly used Eye Gaze to make choices in the classroom and show their thinking. Amy, Lachlan and Elijah have begun to use some programs on the iPad to answer questions and even ask some of their own. We cannot wait to see what else we can do using technology at school.

Room 11 students have been extremely busy after returning from the holidays. We have been learning about water and how we need it in everyday life. Anita completed artwork of Australia which is surrounded by water. We discussed that our own city Sydney has lots of water and how we use the harbour for many activities. Ria completed a silhouette of the Sydney Opera House which is surrounded by water.
To support our money program, we have been going to the canteen each week to purchase something with our money and on occasions we also receive change. Naya enjoys buying a treat for her little sister as well as herself. Louisa is working towards purchasing something independently and is using KWS to greet the Room 14 boys as well as thanking them.
We have had lots of fun completing Halloween craft and worksheets. Jessica made an amazing pumpkin and Suzie worked well completing her silhouette witch. Our room is looking very bright with lots of craft work hanging up.
