Opening of the Courtyard by the Epping Club (March 11th)
This was a lovely occasion where the Epping Club visited our school in force to say some very kind words, they chatted with dignitaries, and a representative of our students showed them the courtyard in use. John Alexander (MP) and Betty Ockerlander were both very complimentary of our facilities and pleased to be included in our (catered) morning tea. Tess turned on the charm and tried to persuade everyone to feed her, but she did delight the Epping Club staff with some tricks in return for pieces of a fruit salad. We plan to rename this space in collaboration with the local Aboriginal community, potentially based on its theme of music
P&C AGM (March 15th)
Five of our families represented at our P&C meeting. They enjoyed a 30- minute tour of the school before the light failed and then a general meeting. The AGM has been postponed until the next meeting (7.30pm on Wednesday April 28th) so that we had enough school representation to vote on the positions. Potentially P&C meetings will move to Wednesdays in future, which seems to suit the majority of attendees. I note in some historical paperwork dating back to 1982 (39 years ago!), the P&C used to meet on the third Wednesday of the month- so we are returning to a Karonga tradition.
Harmony Day (March 17th)
This was a low-key event this year. We all miss the multi-cultural luncheon that has been a well-established tradition at Karonga (assisted by Epping Boys) so plan to revive it when we can.
Many of the students wore traditional/ heritage dress, and many others wore the colour orange which is symbolic of the event.

Hi everyone!
Welcome to Room 2 this year! I would like to share with you some of the activities we have been doing with the learners this term.
We have really been loving our music classes and the students are quite interactive with the instruments. Oras is awesome with the xylophone and plays to Jack's tune! Harry and Julian enjoy ringing the bells.
We have been reading the book “Sail Away: The Ballad of Skip and Nell”. The students did some art activities on some of the characters. Pictured, is Sunday who independently gave “Wombat” some fur.
In Room 2 we are also working on allowing the students to experience other spaces within the school. Oras and Sunday had a “kind’ moment sharing the seesaw on the playground. They love playing on the equipment!
We took students to visit the chickens and pick some fruits. They thoroughly enjoyed the mandarins and feijoa fruit!

Nargis and Banu
Room 13 Boys never cease to amaze us!! They have all been trying really hard to do their best.
The boys have been quite motivated to help make some class books featuring fantastic examples of the students demonstrating their Kind, Safe and Learn- Positive Behaviour Framework as they enjoy the various routines in the programme. They love to show what “great waiting, lining up, listening to their teachers, taking turns, moving quietly around the school , staying together and learning new things” looks like! We have all been reading our new social stories and finding ourselves doing great things in the pictures. I often find a student reading to another one, with something like “Wow, Look at you there!”
Early this term we were fortunate to be able to have some valuable cricket lessons to develop our skills. The class was positively engaged in all the activities and waited really well for their turns too.
Swimming is quite structured and like real swimming lessons for Room 13. I had the opportunity to watch a lesson recently and I was quite impressed with the sequencing of the lesson and the activities and again the effort and engagement of our students. They will listen to instructions and try new activities while working together as a group. It was that, that inspired me to make the social storybooks for the students to read and in doing so reinforce the positive behaviours that we notice.
Aria recently represented our school in The Combined Schools’ Swimming Carnival. It was lovely to hear such positive reports back concerning his behaviour and participation. Well done, Aria.
The students are loving the new equipment and areas in the school. We enjoy exploring all the fixed musical instruments, mirrors, gears and activities in the new courtyard area. The bikes have been a great hit with a variety of sizes and types for the students to develop skills on. The new lunch seats have added interest to some mealtimes by turning lunch into a picnic!
Room 13 have taken to music therapy this year with some truly wonderful moments exploring sound and voice together. We are amazed by Jordan and William’s singing and Oscar is a bit of a star on the piano.
The students have learnt to transition safely to the various learning spaces around the school such as our weekly visits to the library for our library session with stories, borrowing and a craft activity, the music therapy suite, the bike-track, the oval for walking, the technology room, the gymnasium, the sensory Room, the hall for assemblies and canteen, the multi-sports courts for ball games and the Independent Living Centre to do cooking.
In our own classroom, the students have been working hard in Literacy and numeracy. They have been cooperating exceptionally well to play whole class learning games and activities. We read in groups and individually and work together on the interactive Whiteboard to do our Mathseeds programme. We are grateful for the new class equipment that has supported our learning.
We have noticed quite a few examples of students being kind and willingly helping each other, too.

Well done Room 13!
Deb, Sujung and Wei.
Move and Shake Club
The students have been enjoying and improving their climbing, rolling and balancing skills over the past few weeks. They have also enjoyed popping bubbles and playing musical instruments. They sometimes play on the soft stairs and rollers together and on their own.

Make a mess Club
The students have made ice cream with shaving cream and paint. This was very messy but lots of fun. They also got to use putty and made pretend lollies and did lots of cutting and gluing of mosaic paper pieces onto a stencil. Some of the students who did not like the feel of the shaving cream and putty are now happy to play with it.

Bilma Tappers Club
Each Monday during first term, George, Jaehyun, Sarah, Dakota, Paige and Raj have used some of their break time, participating in the Bilma tappers group. We take our name ‘Bilma’ from an Aboriginal word for clapping sticks.
The group uses tapping sticks to accompany music such as Boom Boom Pow, Pump It, Raining on the Rock and Old Man Emu. Students tap sticks together and drum on the back of chairs.
All students participate and thoroughly enjoy immersing themselves in the loud music, and so do the staff!

Karonga School is the reflection of our community. Students and staff come from a diverse range of cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive learning environment that benefits all students, including those from language backgrounds other than English.
Harmony Day was celebrated at Karonga School on March 17th 2021. It is a day to celebrate our cultural diversity. It is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for everyone.
Students arrived at school in their traditional costumes or wearing orange to represent harmony. Here are the selection of photos from the fun filled day.

He will be remembered as a friendly, amiable student who was liked by all.
