Hello everyone, to the final newsletter for term 1 2021. It has been a very short term, as there was only one day for students to attend in week 1, and this is a four day week.
During term 1 we had acoustic paneling fitted in the hall, as many students are highly anxious in this echoing space, and the response so far has been very positive. During the holidays we will have improved lighting installed in there too (LED) so when we can start having parents attend our end of term assemblies, and other events, you should see and hear a big difference.
World Down Syndrome Day was celebrated on the Wednesday of Week 9 at Karonga, as the actual date fell at the weekend. Odd socks were worn with pride, and it was a fun way to acknowledge the date.
When we come back, we have a very busy week planned.
Monday April 19th is a School Development Day where we have an external presenter coming to school to promote more ways of offering life-skills.
Tuesday April 20th Students return for Term 2.
Wednesday April 21st, We have a Scottish piper coming to our school assembly to commemorate Anzac Day (as it falls at a weekend). The students will practice what bagpipes sound like from some YouTube clips beforehand. The School Captain John, and Vice-Captain Jayden, will lay a wreath in the Anzac Garden.
Friday April 23rd School photos.
Guilty as charged
We held an afternoon tea on Wednesday afternoon, for the drivers and support officers who bring our students to school. Tess, who has been on a strict diet all year, took her opportunity to feast of 8 on the hot cross buns we had planned for the afternoon tea! She was found over the opened bag, and looked very guilty.
Even the Karonga Therapy Dog is ready for the holidays!
Looking forward to seeing all the students return on Tuesday April 20th.
Warm Regards, Ruth Rogers
Room 6 have been lucky to stay together for another year in 2021. Hannah, Omar, Bavan and Gordon have been very welcoming to our two new students, Sami and Felicia, who have settled in seamlessly.
Our start to the school year has been a very active one with students enjoying a return to the pool, gym and new playground equipment. We have especially loved getting onto the bike track. Omar and Felicia love picking up a bit of speed and feeling the wind in their hair as they glide along on Karonga’s brand new bikes!
We have continued our Friday routine from 2020 with class picnics up on the oval. Sami and Hannah are fantastic helpers getting our picnic baskets and blankets up to the oval and back afterwards. All Room 6 students transition safely through the school together being sure to walk with the group at all times.
2021 has brought a change to break times, with our students participating in all sorts of different clubs from Bavan’s ‘Make a Mess’ club to Gordon’s ‘Dance Group’ and Omar enjoying 'Signing Choir'. This has been a fantastic initiative to add more variety to the students’ week, which they have responded to very positively.

Karonga students have been very busy bees in technology this term. We started the term by interacting with BeeBots and learning how to code them; we moved them forwards, backwards, right, and left. We also practised our maths skills by counting how many squares we needed to move so BeeBot could reach its destination.
Our students also thoroughly enjoyed the animal robots Scrambles the fox and Dipper the narwhal. The students could create special paths and roads for Scrambles and Dipper by putting together puzzle pieces, or making a new path with a black texta and white cardboard. Scrambles the fox is sadly acting a little literally scrambled right now but that just means our students have had lots of fun!
Our next mission was to make a robot dinosaur move. The dinosaurs have a very tricky controller but some of our students were absolute experts with it, particularly Omar. We were also able to make the dinosaurs hunt, protect, and roar. The roar was a little lackluster but we still enjoyed it.
And, finally our newest addition to the robot family has been Mo-bots, named so after their awesome mohawks. Our Mo-bots have been very busy delivering Easter eggs around the school. We hope to have a video to show you all very soon!
Thanks for a great term of technology and we look forward to interacting with more technical devices in Term 2.

The students have been enjoying engaging with a range of different musical instruments including drums, piano, chimes, guitars, and a variety of interactive percussion instruments. They have also explored dance movements and improvised different combinations of sounds. It is always a fun and engaging time in our Improvisation lunchtime club.

During Term 1 in PDHPE we have focused on gross motor skills with an emphasis on specifically targeted skills leading up to the students developing skills to play Cricket.
All students have made fantastic progress with their skills and Cricket was a hit. The students have also practised waiting, sitting and sportsmanship whilst developing their Cricket skills.
Swimming began in week 4 of Term 1 and all students were very excited to be back in the water and develop their personal swimming skills. The beautiful smiles and laughter are clear evidence of the joy that all our students have whilst in the pool.

Viki, Aria, Jaehyun, William L, James, George and Massa all represented Karonga with pride and fantastic sportsmanship at the Combined Schools swimming gala in Concord.
In Term 2 we are focusing on improving our gross motor skills, water safety and swimming skills. The students in K-6 are also looking forward to the Swim School program which is running in Week 2 and 3 of next term.
