Message from the Director of Education, Leadership
A NEW PRINCIPAL FOR KARONGA SCHOOL
I would like to congratulate Ruth Rogers for her successful merit appointment to the position of principal at Karonga School. Mrs Rogers previously held the position of Deputy Principal at Karonga School and has acted in the position of principal for the last two years as Mr Gosbell was seconded to other duties.
Mrs Rogers comes to the position with a strong understanding of leadership, pedagogy and the needs of students in her care. I know that you will join me in welcoming Mrs Rogers into her new position and look forward to her driving the continual improvement we all want for our students and teachers.
Mrs Rogers was appointed from the beginning of Term Two 2021.

Welcome back everyone for Term 2. Newsletters this term will be issued on odd numbered school weeks.
Firstly, may I take the opportunity to thank the school community for its support over the two years Mark relieved elsewhere and I stepped into the Principal’s role. It has been an amazing opportunity, and I have relished the challenge. My application for the Principal position outlined my qualifications regarding leadership (a Masters in Educational Leadership from UNSW) and a lifelong commitment to special education. I am excited to be leading the school through the new four-year Strategic Improvement Plan, and to drive some great initiatives.
Week 1 has been a busy one, with returning students, the Anzac Ceremony and school photos. The students all seemed happy to be back at school, which is so pleasing, with sharp haircuts and fresh uniforms.
The Anzac Ceremony, whilst premature, meant that we could include a bagpiper to our assembly for everyone to experience. Classes had practiced what the bagpipes sounded like leading up to the live performance just prior to the regular weekly assembly. The School Captain, John, and the Vice-Captain Jayden C followed the piper through the school and via the wheelchair accessible path to the new path leading to the revised Anzac Garden. This path was partly funded through a grant applied for by the P&C and now affords all students access to the orchard area, now known as the Anzac Garden.

We spent a moment being quiet before returning to the school buildings.

The wreath that was carried by the School Captain John, and left there for the Anzac weekend, was made on a frame by Room 14 students and was fabricated from rosemary and hand-made replica poppies.
Photographs today have been challenging at times- the staff work so hard to ensure the students present well, and ‘smile for the camera’- crossed fingers for the final results.
Next Wednesday April 28th at 7.30pm in the Therapy Suite, is the revised date for the P&C AGM. Please try and support our school by attending and sharing ideas. It is a friendly event, and I understand that they hope to consider ways in which the P&C can support projects at Karonga- so come along and vote for your favourite initiative.
