Staff at school were all offered the flu vaccine in week 4- just a reminder to take care of ourselves and prevent sickness when we can.
It was terrific last week to see and hear about Room 13’s involvement in making their own butter. Essentially a science lesson (how some liquid states change to solid), the teacher used the opportunity to focus on verbs – as the students had to rotate the handle to churn, math’s for counting and a history session as the group learned that this is how people used to make butter, and create butter milk as a byproduct. I anticipate that the ‘Food Technology’ practical component (eating the produce) was highly anticipated.
We have 2 new students joining our school later this term. They are both boys, called Jack and Adam- so do make them welcome when you meet them.
Simultaneous Storytime, for our primary age students was celebrated on May 19th. Whilst the timing does not always suit the rhythm of the Karonga day, junior students all accessed the YouTube delivery of the book ‘Give me some space’ by Philip Bunting.
The weather has really turned cold, so layering children’s clothing is a really good idea- as we use reverse-cycle A/C to keep classrooms warm. May I remind you however to label all clothing. There are washable texta’s available as well as iron-on name tags, so please use whichever method suits you best.
Today, May 21st, we have Dominic Perrottet visiting our school. He is the NSW Treasurer for the Liberal Party, and part-funded, supporting the Karonga P&C, an accessible pathway to the Anzac Garden. We are hopeful that he will visit again during Education Week in Term 3.
We have plans to install a more challenging playground over the next school holidays. We are using a section of grassed area beside the pool changing room to provide balance poles, stepping stones, a rope climbing course and some monkey bars. We hope that work will commence as soon as school concludes, and it will be a valuable play space for many.
Warm Regards, Ruth Rogers
Room 5 finished term 1 with a bang. In term 2, we are doing History as our Unit of Work. Our topic is ‘Investigating the Past’. We are researching our personal connections to history and investigating objects, places and events that are ‘old and new’. We look forward to an exciting term of fun, engaging activities and learning new things.
During independent reading session, Gianni enjoys reading books while Sarah, Sidney, William and Titan enjoy listening to us reading them books. Room 5 students enjoyed being creative and making lovely Mother’s Day candle holders and flower pots for our hardworking Mum’s. Students liked painting different colours on their candle holder.
During Music therapy sessions, Sidney and William enjoy exploring, playing different instruments and creating their own music.
Gianni and Titan are learning to work together, take turns and complete a task together. It is great to see the students helping each other. We look forward to a happy term of learning and fun!

Until next time,
Kamaldeep and Sandiya.
Sadly, Room 8 said farewell to Ma’afu at the end of last term. We miss him and wish him and his family every success in their relocation interstate.
As usual, we are very busy with our learning in Room 8.
Each Wednesday, the students, Colin, Jane and class staff access Carlingford Court as part of the class geography program. Students are investigating man made environments. The students look forward to the program each week. Steven locates the class red and yellow safety t-shirts. Students wear these colours in order to make them highly visible. Viki is able to walk independently from the classroom to the school bus.
Swim school held in weeks 2 and 3 was a great success. The students eagerly listened to the swim instructors and made great progress during the intensive program.
Music therapy is a highlight for the students each week. Agam enjoys experimenting with all musical instruments. George demonstrates rhythm and timing playing the xylophone.
In Room 8, we believe physical fitness and wellbeing lead to students being better learners. To this end, the class takes daily walks, in the Autumn sunshine, around the school oval and through the orchard. All students love shuffling through the fallen leaves and hearing crunching noise. Thomas particularly loves crunching the leaves and running down the grassy slopes.
Until next time,
Megan and Jennifer
Room 14 have been visiting many different environments recently.
We learnt about different cultures as we travelled the globe via the international gardens in Fagan Park at Galston.
The students were kind and respectful celebrating the ANZACs by trekking the Kokoda memorial trail in Rhodes.

We were also safe when had many working bees in Karonga gardens including the Karonga fruit orchard.

We all wore our Covid safe masks in Coles and Bunnings when buying supplies for the Canteen & Olive grove. We took the masks off when we ate our treat of hot chips!

This Term our students are learning to create short videos. Our aim is to create a whole-school short film and enter it in the Focus On Ability Film Festival.
Our students have been learning to create scenes by positioning different items, starting filming, causing movements during filming, and stopping filming. The different ideas coming from our students are just amazing!
Our most popular items to film have been Spider-Man, a train, and some toy dinosaurs, and of course the students themselves! In some classes, we have also started experimenting with music to accompany our videos. The Jurassic Park theme tune has proven to be a very popular soundtrack!

We look forward to sharing our video with you in the near future.

Another great year with the great performers in our Karonga dance team! Our students are nailing some challenging steps. We have nine students in the dance team with Mel, Kamal and Emma, ranging in age from Year 3 to Year 12. We start our session with some warm up steps and then start our dance practise. This year we have a medley of some old and new songs, and we have incorporated some mindfulness moves towards the end of our session. We rehearse once a week during break times on the stage in the hall. We are very excited to perform again at Epping Music Festival 2021 at Chatswood Concourse. We are the only special school involved in that festival.
Looking forward to have an amazing year of 2021.
Until next time, Kamaldeep
Band with Jack the Music Therapist
On Wednesdays, some of our students have been enjoying Band club with Jack, our music therapist. Students have the choice of a range of instruments from chimes and drums to piano and ukulele! Sometimes we just like to sing and dance to the music our friends are creating for us!
