It was terrific on Wednesday of week 6 to see some senior parents attend our Senior Parent Evening. I do encourage all senior parents to attend these friendly events, as all too soon your young person will be exiting the school system. We try to keep parents of senior students informed of the provisions available to in a range of ways: meetings with the Transition Officer, an Expo in the hall where local service providers have a stall to advertise their location and provision, and, as we did this term, Karonga parents talking through their experience. Josh’s mum (he graduated in 2020) and George’s dad (George will graduate this year) spoke of how they have navigated this process. It is so great to hear of Karonga families (current or past) helping other families. As the saying goes “It takes a village to raise a child”.
The P&C also met on Wednesday evening of week 6. Thank you to Jane who put on snacks and drinks. This was a good opportunity to share what was happening at Karonga, and hear perspectives. Please come along to these important meetings- where the focus is always the wellbeing of the students.
I was out of school on a course for 3 days this week. It was a leadership course I committed to with Mark Gosbell back in 2019, but COVID paused the program delivery. It was a refreshing opportunity to meet with the Executive from other schools and navigate the school process.
Lastly, but importantly, I would like to share the sad news, of the passing of one of our students. Alkira has attended our school for many years, but has had poor health for some time, and sadly passed away a week ago. She was in Year 8, and leaves her twin continuing to attend Karonga School.
Her funeral will be on Tuesday. Please contact the school if you would like the details.
Warm Regards, Ruth Rogers
We are over halfway through another busy term for Room 4.
Christian works hard to practise his fine motor skills. He enjoys touching and feeling different objects, and discovering what they are made of.
Dakotah continues to extend her verbal repertoire, including asking staff if they have heard what she just said. Her favourite phrase is still to wish everyone a happy birthday, despite it not actually being anyone in the class birthday!
Jayden likes to share with the class when he is ready for swimming. He will tap on his legs and then move his arms to each side to show he has his swimming shorts on!
Jesse has demonstrated a fondness for the Jurassic Park theme music. He breaks into a big grin and then peacefully closes his eyes whenever it is played.
Leila continues to attempt every task with enthusiasm. She recently threw herself into playing the chimes with a drum stick during band practice. Leila kept a very tight grip on that stick!
Shania is our quiet achiever. She carefully listens to different situations and responds thoughtfully. She has also enjoyed the Jurassic Park music. Who knew there were so many dinosaur fans in Room 4?!

We look forward to another few weeks of school. Until next time!
Room 13 has been very busy this term. We have been learning about liquids, solids and gases in science.
We made butter using an old butter churn and looked at the history of butter making.
We poured in pure cream and a little bit of buttermilk which is the culture-starter.
The students took turns to turn the handle. We looked at other hand-mixers to observe the gears changing the direction of motion. The gears are hidden in our butter churn so we couldn’t see them.
At first, we made whipped cream then all of a sudden, the butter separated from the liquid (buttermilk). We then had a solid and a liquid. We poured off the buttermilk to leave the butter. We then washed the butter to remove all the buttermilk.

We tasted the butter on an English Muffin.
We made jelly in our cooking class and patiently waited while the liquid formed into a solid.
We observed the changes in our jelly as we dissolved the jelly crystals into hot water, and also when our jelly was becoming a solid while it was cooling in the fridge.
We could observe our set jelly wobble when we tipped it upside down!
We could feel our jelly dissolve in our mouths while we ate it.

We listened to the National story time from space and watched a video of astronauts going into space in a rocket. The boys are pretty excited to be learning about space next term.
On Friday’s some of our students will be visiting Room 7 to read stories to the kindy students.
From Deb, Sujung ,Wei and our TAFE student SLSO, Alyssa.
Every Thursday, Haley, Farhan, Dakotah, Elijah, George and Chris come together to show off their drumming, singing and shaking skills.
We offer the students different instruments to play, often focusing on their strengths. We then sing and play along to music that Jack will play.

On Tuesdays, Aria, Felicia, Hayley, Brendan, Jayden F and Viki have been participating in the “Lucky Strikers” club. All students have enjoyed learning to play Tenpin Bowling. We have learnt how to set up the pins and how to knock them down. Some of the students use the ramp and others are learning how to place their fingers in the special three holes to knock down the pins. Lucky Strikers is full of fun and laughter with a strike or two.
