On Tuesday June 8th, we celebrated the life of Alkira, one of our students from Room 4. Her twin sister attended the service alongside 3 members of staff and 2 parent representatives. It was a very touching service. We hope to celebrate Alkira’s time at Karonga in a special moment around what would have been her birthday.
We are finally able to have parents on site, and we are looking forward to the upcoming ‘End of Term assembly’ next Wednesday June 23rd at 9.30am. All are invited, though specific invites are going out if students are getting an award. We know how these events can be very disruptive to family life or work commitments, so we hope these specific invites help to plan for attendance when possible.
The NAIDOC Aboriginal experience for our Junior School was a great success with Lisa from Gibberagong Education Centre facilitating the experience. Whilst the weather prevented heading up to the Multi-sport court, the students threw spears in the hall, did art work using river pebbles, felt emu and kangaroo skins and after grinding ocre, used it to paint their own faces. We were disappointed that the senior excursion has had to be postponed, but crossed fingers for better weather in August.

The Queen’s Birthday threw a lot of students (and staff) who have been playing “What day is it today?” all week.
Staff attended a ‘twilight’ 3 hours session after school on Wednesday to brainstorm behavior management techniques. Wednesday also heralded the P&C meeting where I went through the School Improvement Plan. By popular response it has moved to a Wednesday at 6.45pm every 4 weeks. Do make a note in your diaries to attend and support our lovely school. Next meeting is at 6.45pm on Wednesday July 21st.
Warm Regards, Ruth Rogers
Kugan, Sadev, Om, Raj, Timmie and Tomo – the students in Room 1 – have settled well into class routines in Term 2.
Among their favourite activities are swimming and music therapy with Jack.
The students have continued to work on the class theme: ’Are We There Yet?’ This explored the many aspects of life in Australia such as: our flag, the states, the flora and fauna, the physical features of Australia, multiculturalism, the story of the indigenous people, and much more.
Preparing special gifts for our mums on the occasion of Mothers’ day, was a highlight this term. The students created cards, a special puzzle and bath salts, with which to pamper mum.
The students studied facts about Reconciliation Day and learned how to sign ‘sorry’. This segued beautifully into their learning about NAIDOC week commemorations at Karonga.
Room 1 have also been working on other KLAs (Key Learning Areas) such as English, Maths and Science. In English, cutting skills, writing skills and word recognition activities are popular; In Mathematics, number recognition, counting, practice on the Interactive Whiteboard take up a fair bit of the students’ learning time; and in Science they are investigating how seeds grow into plants. Jack and the Magic Beanstalk is a favourite story, helping them to learn about growing plants as well!
The time table also provides for many movement breaks and sensory activities to help regulate the students’ behaviour.

Until next time,
Sabrina, Mary, Mandy and Barbara
Hi everyone!
Welcome to Room 2! I would like to share with you some of the activities we have been doing with the learners this term.
We have recently begun our breakfast routine at school. Learners are offered either cereal or toast with butter and a glass of milk (thankfully none of our student have any food allergies). Initially learners were given a visual representation on the steps to be followed, from opening the fridge to get the necessary items, taking out plates, putting on the toaster, waiting patiently for the toast to pop out and thereafter how to butter the toast.

Learners were taught the importance of safety around electrical/hot equipment and did really well waiting patiently in a line. Learners also learnt how to be ‘kind’, Sunday will now take out 2 plates and put one onto his friends table.
We are looking forward to new food prep experiences with the learners next semester!
Nagis & Banu
As Semester 1 is wrapped up and reports are prepared to be sent home, Room 6 students can reflect on two very positive school terms. As a cohort, students have worked very hard in developing their communicative skills and social skills with staff and one another. Sami and Hannah have both expanded their Key Word Signing vocabulary!
Room 6 students have loved engaging in food technology lessons in Karonga’s ILC room. All students work well following recipes to make yummy treats, such as tacos, cupcakes and pasta! Felicia and Gordon show great focus and steady hands when cooking for their peers.
One of our favourite times of the week is music therapy with Jack! Over time, our students are all building their confidence and like to engage in a variety of instruments, from Bavan playing the chimes to Omar lending his wonderful voice to songs with the microphone!

Looking forward to a successful Semester 2!

Gordon, Ruby, Hannah, Jaehyun, Geonwoo, Tomo and Timmie make up the very cool Karonga Club titled Improvisation.
Aptly named ‘Improvisation’, the club members aspire to seize musical moments and create their own interpretation of these. The stiudents dance to music or play a variety of instruments with Jack, our music therapist. They select an instrument of choice (from – a xylophone, flute, tambourines, bells, chimes, a horn, the guitar, ukulele, drums, etc) and then accompany Jack, as he sings a variety of songs for them.
With assistance, Hannah loves to play the chimes; Gordon dances to any piece of music, Timmie happily sings “Ooh, Aah” to ‘Hay, hey, Baby’; Jaehyun bops up and down as he strums a guitar; Ruby is learning to sing, “Hello Timmie!”; Geonwoo plays the ukulele; and Tomo taps to a tambourine.
The students are encouraged to enjoy the experience of being in a musical space and allow the music to calm or motivate them to join in with the group.

We are back! After last year’s pandemic, we are super excited and with enthusiasm, we are learning and practising Key Word Signs to support our old and new songs including ‘True Colours’, ‘A Thousand Years’, ‘I still call Australia Home’ and many more. This year we have added a new song “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. We are getting better each time we practise. We rehearse once a week during break times on the stage in the hall. Eight students are involved this year and signing choir is led by Ruth, Emma, Mel and Kamal. We are looking forward to performing this year at the Epping Music Festival at Concourse, Chatswood on October 28th.

Until next time, Kamaldeep Lamba.

The session will be held in the Technology Room, just after the End of Term assembly on Wednesday 23rd June.
School concludes for Term 2 on Friday June 25th
We welcome students back on Tuesday July 13th for Term 3
