Hello everyone,
We are so pleased that the rain and storms have subsided and we can once again enjoy our lovely school and all it has to offer.
The roof over one third of the school, has finally been completed, and work is underway to transform our canteen into a commercial kitchen so that, besides offering it for use as a (simplified) school canteen- we can offer it as a meeting point for parents on a regular basis.
We held our P&C AGM meeting on Wednesday at 6.45pm. It was attended by a small group of parents and I encourage you to attend this informal gathering, joining other committed parents who want to be involved in their child’s school. They are a friendly group and there is no expectation that you will be part of the main committee if you do not wish to be. We also had parents attend via Zoom link- so please consider being involved in whatever way suits.
We are pleased to share that, if teachers can accommodate ‘External Therapy Services’ in their classrooms, we will be reopening our doors to them from Term 2. Our preference is, that students access therapies outside the school hours, as it is highly disruptive to the whole class when they attend. For some students they have multiple therapies, so you would need to prioritise which services are being considered each term. The first part of the day is prime teaching and learning time and preserved to meet Individual Learning Programs. Therapists may attend between 12 and 2pm:
- Approach the teacher to ask for their support in having a therapist on-site during school hours to deliver essential therapy
- Put an application through to the Learning and Support Team (LaST) for their consideration. This is considered as a school-wide impact.
- If specific therapy is approved- contact the office at school where they will guide the therapist in what they need to supply to the school before the first session.
Karonga School students who have tested positive for COVID-19 during the past 2 weeks
Week 6: Teachers 1; Students 1
Week 7: Teachers 0; Students 0
These numbers do not reflect the numbers that we have had absent from school, as Karonga students who live with family members who test positive for COVID-19 are absent and isolating for the mandatory 7 days, and testing negative before returning. This also applies to staff who have family members testing positive. On Monday we had 9 staff away isolating.
A fabulous 6 weeks into Term 1 already!!
It’s been an amazing journey getting to know the students Raj, Sidney, Sunday, Oras and the lovely Anita of my class, Room 1. Sandiya and I have ensured that all students are supported in their educational journey and well-being. We start each day with the morning circle. It’s the time of togetherness and learning. The squeals of delight when ‘Sunday’ hears his favorite ‘Colors’ song by Jack Hartman or smiles when Rajveer listens to ‘Wash your hand’ song is rewarding.
Routines have become a part of Room 1’s functioning. These 6 weeks have seen the students participating in the 4 Blocks Literacy Program, engaging in art and craft activities, music classes, discovering the immersive classroom and calming down in the sensory room.

Rajveer and Oras showed enthusiasm at drumming during music class.

Anita enjoys doing skill building activities, art and relaxing in sensory room.
Our cooking sessions have been particularly liked by Room 1 students be it pizza making or pancakes. They involve in the preparation and wait patiently till they get to relish their cooking. Oras, Sidney and Sunday are a delight to watch during the cooking class.

Little surprises do make our day. How amazing it was to get a visit from the chickens in the classroom!! Shani and Room 9 students made it possible. The students in Room 1 were all excited and amazed.
Room 1 looks forward to creating more enjoyable experiences as we move ahead in Term 1.

Room 4 has had a busy and exciting start to the year.
We celebrated Jesse’s birthday. Happy Birthday Jesse!
Together with Room 3 we have enjoyed sessions of Music Therapy, Art Therapy and Swimming. These programs are familiar and much-loved by the students.

We have been reading Harry Potter and have been learning about the different characters in the story. Jayden looks fantastic as Harry and Christian is practising some spells with the magic wand.

We have also had the chance to explore the new immersive classroom. Zena and Dakotah are loving the underwater experience.

Last Wednesday we celebrated Harmony Day. Look at everyone dressed in orange.

Room 4 is looking forward to a year full of learning and fun.

Hi everyone!
Welcome to Room 6 this year! Our wonderful class includes Gordon, Bavan, Hannah, Sami, and Julian. Everyone has settled back into our school routines very well and they have already done lots of fantastic learning so far.
Hannah, Gordon and Sami have particularly been loving our class music lessons as well as the music therapy sessions with Jack this term. Hannah loves to play the gong and dance and spin around joyfully. Gordon enjoys singing along and dancing with all of his energy. Sami smiles and claps along to the music, and even had a go at playing the electric drum kit.

Room 6 have also been enjoying participating in class art lessons and art therapy sessions with Lissette. Sami enjoyed choosing from a variety of paints and different materials to create a magical underwater jellyfish artwork. In Art Therapy, Bavan and Gordon helped Lissette to make a papier-mache artwork. It was very sticky, and they were hesitant at first, but they gave it a go and did a fantastic job.
This term the class has begun participating in work experience programs such as gardening, cooking, and work-based skills. Julian helped to pull out the old vegetable plants so that we could lay new top soil, and plant fresh vegetables for the change of season. Bavan used the garden fork to dig out the roots and remove any residual weeds. Hannah and Gordon helped to plant small succulents along the wall of the ILC and watered them using the watering cans.

We are looking forward to all of the great learning experiences to come together this year. Stay tuned!

Due to the poor weather we have only had one Art Attack Wednesday club. The day the students attended they were all engaged and enjoyed the free expression experience. Mustafa and Ruby enjoyed using the dot pens while Noah, Louisa and Ashton showed enthusiasm drawing on the magnetic boards.

World Down Syndrome Day is on March 21st 2022. It signifies the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome.
We encourage our students to wear crazy socks to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st 2022 to help create awareness about Down Syndrome.
