Hello everyone,
Just as the rain has stopped, the temperatures have plummeted further disrupting outdoor play.
The Acknowledgement of Country and National Anthem have, with symbols supporting text, been installed in the hall. Massa, our School Captain, stands in front of them to use Key Word Signs (based on Auslan signs) to further enhance the messaging. This is an inclusive practice which further supports literacy at the school, and is a focal point for assemblies. It is quite daunting to stand at the front for assemblies – so we are so proud of her that she can do this.
Our current COVID-19 numbers reflect 6 staff and 7 students as presenting positive and not attending school. Should you like to access further Rapid Antigen Testing kits please contact the school office as we still have a small stock of kits, even taking into account visitors and contractors who may need them.
Hello,
Rupak and I continue to work very hard with our beautiful students Heba, Haley, Issa, Jedi and Thomas. They have made a huge amount of progress so far.
Students in Room 11 have had the opportunity to participate in swim school which they enjoyed doing each day. It was a pleasure to see them blowing bubbles and having fun in the water, building their confidence as swimmers.
The Aston playground has opened for students and Room 11 have enjoyed exploring it thoroughly. Heba and Haley love playing with their friends as they walk around. Jedi has climbed on every piece of equipment and Thomas and Issa like holding onto the ropes as they move through the playground.

The students in Room 11 are now practising their independent writing and story telling skills with the help of Karen, our Literacy Instructor. It has been such a pleasure to watch them choose letters for the words in their stories and talk about their pieces afterwards.
We hope that we continue to have a great term!
Regards,
Room 11 Teacher, Lou
This term, Room 13 has been experiencing the benefits of our Home Reading Program, so it is a big thank you to our Room 13 parents for supporting their children in the learning to read program.
We are now extending this program by using the sunny weather to build our 'one to one' reading practice and group reading skills. This has been taking place on the "Reading Bench" in the playground with Big Ted the bear. Big Ted is much loved by our Room 13 students and is giving them confidence to read out loud and build trust that there is always someone who enjoys listening to them read.
To add to our exciting reading opportunities, Room 13 participated in the National Simultaneous Story Time 2022. We read a wonderful book called 'Family Tree' by J Pyke and R Ghosh and created our own family trees that you can see in the photo.
We have been learning about money in our mathematics lessons. Everyone has enjoyed looking and learning about the animals on our coins. We have then used colours to paint them as an art activity for our workbooks. This has also helped us identify the different numbers on the coins and then practice using them in our cash registers for shopping.
Our class has been using a points system called Dojos to reward positive Kind, Safe and Learning behaviours in our classroom and on the playground. The student who earns 20 points is given the opportunity to take our Room 13 mascot, Dino Dinosaur to their home for a weekend visit. Our first student to be awarded this privilege was Mark Pataky. Congratulations Mark and Dino said he had a wonderful time visiting over the weekend.
Room 13 has also been using the beautiful sunny days to practice eating our lunch on the silver seats in the playground. This is a wonderful change from eating inside during all the rain and the students have been very responsible by sitting beautifully on the seats until eating time is over. So it is a big well done to all in Room 13!

National Simultaneous Storytime
On 25th May 2022, Karonga students celebrated The National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS). The event held annually, is to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book.
The book chosen this year is 'Family Tree' written by Josh Pyke and illustrated by Ronojoy Ghosh. It's a heartfelt celebration of family, community, the seasons of life, to cherish and to share.
Karonga students enjoyed listening to the book and looking at the pictures. We also did some activities aligned to the book. The students in room 3,7,8, 11,12 & 13 had a great time and were engaged in colouring, painting and cutting activities.

Until next time,
Kamaldeep Lamba
Volunteers needed!
Founders Day, 14th September, celebrates the history of Karonga and the parents who helped to establish a school for children with disability back in 1964. This year, the school is planning a fun-filled day for the students and the P&C would like to fund gift bags filled with exciting items for every student.
We can only do this with your help!
Come and meet other Karonga families for a social and collaborative working bee. If you have any free time during the week of 5th -9th September, please email us at karongapc@gmail.com
We will also be sending a note home in your child’s communication diary.
Our next meeting will be held on 15th June 2022 at 6.45pm and we welcome anyone who is interested in finding out more about some of our initiatives for our school and students. If you cannot attend in person, we can arrange a zoom link. Please contact me at karongapc@gmail.com.
