Hello everyone,
As I look back over the past 2 weeks, I see a whole range of experiences and events which so positively impact our students and staff.
On Tuesday August 30th, we had a Careflight helicopter land on our school oval. It took us all by surprise. It was, in fact, a local emergency 2 streets away and our school was the safest option, but as it happened at 2pm, the Karonga students were waving to the helicopter and thought it was an arranged visit. If I had any influence it would be great for them to offer a regular fly-past.
On Friday September 2nd, we had a lovely breakfast for all our SASS staff. The teachers all contributed elements of a splendid breakfast – and there was a great atmosphere around the canteen (coffee was much appreciated). The ILC (previously sponsored by the P&C) was put to great use.
Thank you Yee-Foong Stone for representing the parents through the P&C. Check out the great photographs on the school Facebook page.
We additionally ran a KWS course on Friday September 2nd. We had 7 parents attend and it was so good to have them back on site, and for them to socialize in the breaks and meet other families. Do consider it for another year- and rest assured that we have lots of fun doing it.
We have, this week, hosted a PECs course (Picture Exchange Communication system). Two of our teachers attended, but importantly we offer our site for holding these professional learning opportunities which gives our school great exposure.
On Wednesday September 7th, we acknowledged National Indigenous Literacy Day- celebrating stories, cultures and languages. Classes watched a live broadcast (storytelling and book reading) led by the ILF Ambassador and music icon Jessica Mauboy. The event was recorded, so you can share this event again by going through the website.
I am pleased to announce that one of our very popular and experienced teachers has secured an APCI role at Karonga (Assistant Principal Curriculum Instructor). Karen Guerin Kerr steps into this position, promoting literacy (including communication) and numeracy throughout the school. Congratulations.
Greetings from Room 1.
Term 3 commenced with the NAIDOC week celebrations. Students in Room 1 read stories celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s culture. They also engaged in puzzles, dot painting and other activities. Anita and Raj enjoyed doing the NAIDOC day activities. Oras excelled in completing the puzzles.

The Science week was celebrated by conducting experiments with glass. In the experiment ‘Storm in a glass’, we explored how when clouds get too heavy holding millions of gallons, it results in rain. How exciting it was for the students! Their happy faces showed it all.
We also looked at how a lighted candle gets extinguished when oxygen supply gets cut off by covering the candle with glass. The students exercised caution in doing this experiment. Sidney showed great focus while doing the experiment.

In literacy, the students were introduced to Shakespeare and the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’. In Maths, the students expanded their knowledge of whole, half and quarter. The students also learnt about healthy eating and road safety.

The students had an amazing time celebrating Sunday’s birthday. The class also made the most of the beautiful sunshine by playing outside and going for walks.

We continue to learn and grow, share a laugh and make the most of the ongoing term.

We have been very busy in Room 2 this term as our families can see on the Seesaw app. All the families in Room 2 have been checking Seesaw to see what we are up to each week and are then able to talk to the students about their positive achievements.
It was great to see some of our parents for our Education Week Open Day and to give you a chance to see what we are doing in the school and in our classroom and we are looking forward to seeing you again on Founders Day.
In History we have been looking at pictures taken in the early days in the Epping area. A photo of the first Karonga School House can be seen in the school foyer.
Room 2 students have been exploring our NAIDOC interest table with enthusiasm. We have carved animals, music sticks for ceremonies, artwork, a beautifully woven basket and a didgeridoo from Katherine, Northern Territory.
Our students are working hard in literacy, creating their own writing, class story books with predictable text, directed reading of “A Mid-summer Nights Dream” and work around our letter and word of the day. We are learning all about print and books.
Science week was a big hit in Room 2. The students cooperated with a peer to create artworks using gravity and learned the skill to move the paint around in the box and then, cooperatively with a partner. We also explored some fun chemical reactions using lemon juice that we squeezed with a very old type of lemon juicer and a modern lemon squeezer. In Science we have been exploring forces. We used push and pull forces to knead and roll pasta dough while comparing an old and a modern rolling pin. We used a traditional pasta machine to push the dough and then cut the spaghetti! We compared some, store bought, dry gluten free spaghetti with our fresh spaghetti.
We are enjoying our Spring walks and our silkworm eggs have hatched!
Room 2 enjoyed making their Fathers’ Day biscuits too. We hope all our Karonga Dads enjoyed their special day.
From Deb and Kerrie

Term 3 has been very busy in Room 6.
We have been enjoying the warmer weather now that spring is here with some walks and spending time outside.

Back in the classroom, we have been doing some spring craft based on what we saw. We have made some multimedia art works of flowers and Sami especially enjoyed the finger-painting part!

We have also been doing some cooking this term. Mixing is good but our favourite part is eating our creations! Gordon was especially pleased with our cupcakes.

We are still doing all of our usual activities. Bavan and Omar love swimming and Julian has been enjoying the sensory room. We have also enjoyed visiting the immersive classroom and doing some of the interactive activities in there.
Next term is graduation and three members of Room 6 are graduating- Bavan, Gordon and Sami. Although we will miss them, we are looking forward to celebrating this very special occasion.
We are sure term 4 is going to be even busier but we can’t wait to see what happens!

Many hands make light work!
Thanks to our wonderful volunteers, all student gift bags are packed ready for next weeks' Founders day celebrations. We have tried to include something for every Karonga student despite their abilities and hope they enjoy these items.
We would love to receive any feedback and photos of Karonga students enjoying these items. If you would like to share, please email karongapc@gmail.com.
