Hello everyone,
The weeks are ticking by and we are getting into the swing of things.
Meet the Teacher
We had a great turn out at our recent ‘Meet the Teacher’ event, where we only had one class with parents who were unable to attend. For those who find it difficult to come in the evening, Education Week (Term 3, week 3) represents a day-time opportunity to attend school and visit your child’s classroom.
‘Meet the Teacher’ was preceded by a workshop run by Candace, an external presenter who works with young people aged 16+ around ‘sexuality’ concerns and appropriateness. It was disappointing that only 5 Karonga students were represented by their parent/s- but please let us know ideas or themes for future workshops and we will do our best to source ‘expert’ speakers if Karonga staff cannot address relevant issues.
Personalised Learning Programs
PLP (Personalised Learning Programs) are well under way with families making time to meet with class staff to tailor a learning program to student need/s. These can- and often are- modified in Semester 2 if students exceed learning goals. Do take the time to consider what independence learning goals would make a difference to your family life, and make a case for it at the meeting.
Karonga P&C
Last weeks P&C meeting was fairly well attended- in person and via the zoom link. The next one is preceded by the AGM, but do consider coming along, or asking for the zoom link to watch/ join-in remotely from your home.
Karonga Expo
Last night (February 23rd) we held an Expo here at school for parents of senior students to consider post-school options for after Y12. We had 6 service providers bring flyers and materials, each planning to speak for a few minutes individually about their setting. Whilst we want to run/offer these expo’s on an annual basis we need families to support it and WANT to learn more about life after school. There were 17 of us last night waiting for senior Karonga families in the hall and no parents or carers attended. This event does not directly affect/ concern Karonga School, as it is part of the planning for life beyond Year 12, so in future I will canvas family interest and only offer it if we have parents willing to attend.

Tarnae is making great progress adjusting to his new environment at Karonga.
We have been exploring different spaces around the school as a class while practicing staying together when transitioning, wearing our hats if outside and safe hands. Ruby, James, Adam and Tarnae have done well to leave their hats on when we are outdoors as a class. Paige has made some excellent progress, surprising us all with her increased independence and maturity after the long break.

Genesis has had excellent in-seat behaviour being very quick to follow teacher directions to “Sit down” for group times and remain seated.
James has been an excellent role model with unpacking his bag, tidying away and using the bins.
All Room 7 students have progressed to Pembroke playground and are adjusting well to the change. Steven and Paige are loving the see-saw. Our students are enjoying the opportunity to use Maxi’s playground and Crawford as a class where we can use some different equipment.

Some highlights of our week are the music therapy program with Jack, swimming, cooking, art therapy and library. Adam is very focused when exploring new instruments in music therapy.

James has been putting everyone’s lunchboxes out ready for lunch and doing a great job. All our students are eating well, drinking lots of water, refilling their bottles and learning to pack their lunch things away afterwards.
Ruby is our star at completing difficult jig saw puzzles and amazes all of us. Adam loves books and is careful when looking through them.
Our students are all completing their deskwork in literacy and numeracy in their individual ways with their own adjustments and settling into the work routine.

The students have enjoyed the Immersive Classroom during technology sessions with many different environments to explore. The students have found the sensory room, which is right next to our classroom, a stimulating yet calming space to be in.
Well Done Room 7 students.
Debbie and Cassie

After enjoying the new year break, I am keen to get back to what I do best.... my support role at school. Join me on the therapy couch as we go on a journey discovering the KIND SAFE & LEARN values that are important lessons for all our students.
