Hello everyone,
We have such beautiful weather recently that it has been delightful to see the children playing outside and making the most of our beautiful grounds. Our 9 acres are being put to use by many of the classes, and we are negotiating additional shade sails for our spaces this year. Do be assured however, that where high temperatures are anticipated, that the classes pair and students remain in air-conditioned classrooms.
PLP meetings (Personalised Learning Plan meetings) and ITP meetings (Individual Transition Plan meetings) are currently concluding which has given all families an opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss their child’s learning goals and needs. This sets our students up for a great year of learning and tailors their learning program to individual needs.
We have been completing some great professional learning as a staff with our new APCI Karen Guerin-Kerr around Literacy and Numeracy, and we are investing heavily in resources to meet the range of access points for Karonga students. She is also going to lead some twilight sessions (3.15- 6.15pm) this term and next term in Literacy and Numeracy, while further extended days will cover learning about Aboriginal programming and autism. Staff voted to complete this learning while the school terms were active as opposed to attending ‘School Development Days’ at the end of the school year, when staff are tired and less focused. I think that this affords our students the best opportunity to benefit from professional learning time, and means that changes to practice can be embedded during the school year. The 4 twilights/ extended days are
- 22.03.2023 Twilight 3.15- 6.15pm Week 9 Curriculum reform
- 24.04.2023 Extended day 1 Term 2 : Autism focus
- Wednesday 26.04.2023 Term 2 Week 1 Curriculum reform
- 14.06.2023 Term 2 week 8: 3.15- 6.15pm Aboriginal programming
Harmony Day - Tuesday 21st March.
Final reminder (as the next newsletter comes out after this date). Please join us in the school hall between 12-1.30pm with a plate or bowl of food, and help us celebrate our multicultural school. Please dress in cultural clothes, or orange – the significant colour for Harmony Day. Relatives are welcome to join us in the hall. Please send plates or bowls of food in for sharing on the day, at the event, or the day before – clearly labelled if they contain sensitive food groups (allergic or religious). Coffee will be served afterwards from the canteen in the café area outside the hall.
Hello, my name is Louise Williamson and I am the Room 11 class Teacher. This year, we have Anamika as our class SLSO. Anamika and I welcome our beautiful students Lucas W, Lucas T, Ali, Harvey, Matty and Nakissa to kindergarten for the 2023 academic year. We are so happy to be sharing this learning journey with them.
All students are so happy to be back. Everyday we start the day with outside playwork. It has been such a pleasure to see our students enjoying this social and gross motor skills time and watch them thoroughly enjoy playing on the play equipment.
We then enjoy morning circle, greeting each other and singing songs about the days of the week, months of the year, the weather and what season it is. The children enjoy using books to point at to give the answers.
We have been excited to be getting straight our new K-2 English curriculum, reading beautiful stories such as Our Island and Under the Southern Cross and practising our letter of the week each day.
A highlight of the week has been our weekly music therapy with Jack. It is really fun and we enjoy playing the instruments with our peers. We also love our weekly cooking and swimming class!

Room 13 have had a great start to the new school year. We have all settled into our new class and are enjoying doing all sorts of learning activities.
We have been doing some great literacy work following the new curriculum. All the students in Room 13 like to listen to songs about the letter of the week, and we have been making the letters in different ways; Julie liked using shaving foam to make the letter ‘A’ and George is good at writing the letters on the smartboard.

Science is a big hit with all our students. We join with our friends in Room 12 to try some new experiments. Mason loved making lava lamps and Jedi enjoyed experimenting with liquids and solids.

We look forward to our music therapy session each Thursday. Thomas enjoys playing the piano with Jack and Haley tries all the instruments to find her favourite.

Another of our favourite activities is a trip to the immersive classroom to try out the different sensory games. Popping bubbles and making fireworks are big hits!

We can’t wait to see what else this term brings for Room 13!
Emma and Andrea
