Dear families,
What beautiful weather we have had recently to take advantage of our lovely playgrounds. Maxi’s is utilising the Bluetooth connectivity to great effect with our outdoor speaker system and adds great atmosphere to playtime. At the end of the week, if Jack is not running clubs, he joins students on Pembroke and Aston to be a ‘wandering minstrel’ and play his guitar as he walks around. He has quite a following.
The Church who uses our hall at weekends for their services and classes generously donate each time we have seasonal events. Umbrellas for Father’s Day seemed a great idea, and we thanked them on your behalf. I know that classes too were busy making cards, fudge, and craft to send home. Thank you to all the dads and father-figures who play such an important part in our children’s lives.
Founders Day on September 14th is fast approaching. This is becoming a highlight of the year. We use it to acknowledge the original families who started a special school in Epping before the Education Department (such as it was then) embraced Special Education. Whilst our buildings only date to the late 1970’s, on September 14th, 1964 this group of parents laid the foundations and were spoken about in Parliament. Please join us from 12 noon. While students head back to classrooms at 1.30pm you are welcome to join us in the canteen for refreshments 1.30-2pm. Please respond to our RSVP so that we can ascertain and anticipate numbers attending, and permissions for children to engage with the Petting Zoo to comply with hygiene rules.
Below is the link to a podcast which aired yesterday, about our school. The interview has been recorded and intended as an interview for a magazine article, so excuse any repetition of words. I think anything that speaks well of our little school is good publicity:
Room 1 students continue to work towards achieving their learning goals. Most students have square dancing as a socialisation goal. We join with Rooms 2 and 4 each Tuesday to practice the routine. There is lots of laughter and fun during this socialisation opportunity. Oras and Om particularly enjoy the program.
Art therapy with Lisette is one of the highlights of the week. All students demonstrate active participation and the hour flies by. Students have had the opportunity to experiment with a range of art making media e.g. porcelain bowl painting, marbling, dot painting and 3D displays. Sidney and William especially relish the sensory aspects of making art.
Our weekly geography and visual arts program have seen us access a number of natural and manmade environments within the local community. The students use an iPad to take photographs of manmade structures and natural landscapes. We usually have time to use swings, flying foxes and climbing apparatus. Anita and William have shown great progress in using the iPad to capture interesting images.

Until next time
Megan, Sandiya and Peter
Throughout this term the students in Room 4 have enjoyed a range of beautiful books. In recent weeks, we have been listening to the story “The Lost Girl” by Ambelin Kwaymullina. Whilst reading this book, we learned about bush tucker, so we decided to make Wattleseed damper. It was delicious!

Another book that we have enjoyed this term is A Dark, Dark Tale by Ruth Brown. As a class we created our own version of this beautiful text and made it into a video, we hope you enjoy it!
On Wednesday 6th September our school celebrated Indigenous Literacy Day. This year the theme was Celebrating Stories, Cultures and Languages, and we watched a live broadcast from the Sydney Opera House featuring ILF Ambassadors Jessica Mauboy and Justine Clarke.
We listened to three stories written by Indigenous authors including Shordi Krik from the Barunga Community in the Northern Territory, Country Tells Us When from a school in Rubibi (Broome), and We Look, We Find celebrating the Thaynakwith language from Napranum.
Celebrating School Administrative & Support Staff (SASS) Week
Whilst individual teachers or exec could recognize the work that SASS staff do throughout the school (GA/ Office/ SLSO’s) we recognized then collectively today with a breakfast before school. Teaching staff contributed something to the huge breakfast, and waited on them in the hall/canteen area. It was great fun, and now an annual event.
This newsletter we are focussing on the important behaviour rules when travelling to and from school, arriving at the school bus bays, or when venturing out on an excursion.

P&C Meeting

Founders Day - Thursday 14 September 2023
The P&C are happy to announce that we will be funding the mobile animal zoo again this year. It was a great success last year, and we hope that students and families can once again enjoy petting and holding various small animals.
